Ram has officially dropped new patent information regarding the future design of their trucks. Specifically, Ram files patent on Cyber Truck design elements to potentially increase efficiency. This move has left many in the automotive world in shock. Consequently, the images released in the patent look exactly like a Tesla Cybertruck. This raises a significant question regarding how Tesla missed patenting this specific design first. Furthermore, as Ram files patent on Cyber Truck design cues, it signals a major aerodynamic shift.
Historically, Ram trucks have been more aerodynamic than other pickups due to their unique shape. However, this new patent takes things to a completely different level. The design aims to create a more “flow” oriented structure. As a result, the vehicle appears exceptionally clean. It does not look horrible. In fact, it resembles a Ram TRX with an extra bar extending down to the bed. Overall, the visual similarities to the Cybertruck are undeniable.
Analyzing the Aerodynamic Strategy
The primary goal behind this patent is clearly aerodynamics. Ram is attempting to make their trucks slice through the air more efficiently. Currently, it is unclear if this will strictly provide more electric range or higher fuel economy for combustion engines. However, they would not file the patent if it did not offer a tangible performance benefit. The design intends to streamline the truck’s profile.
Interestingly, the design features a bar that integrates into the bed. This creates a silhouette that mimics the sharp angles of the Tesla. Consequently, this leads to speculation about why Tesla did not lock down this specific geometry globally. To many observers, it looks exactly like a Cyber Truck. Therefore, Ram seizing this opportunity is a bold move.
I find it interesting that this design is emerging now. Perhaps I am wrong, but the resemblance is striking. Nevertheless, the execution looks good. It creates a seamless transition from the cab to the rear of the vehicle. Thus, it could redefine the look of future high-performance Ram trucks.
Fuel Economy Speculation and Accessories
A major question surrounds the utility of this design. For example, is this something consumers would buy as an add-on accessory? Furthermore, I am wondering if Ram is utilizing this design to meet strict fuel economy standards. If Ram can attach this to a new TRX or a 1,000-horsepower truck, it could change the game. Specifically, it might allow them to achieve better fuel economy numbers on paper.
If this design allows Ram to keep building high-horsepower monsters by improving their aerodynamic rating, I am 100% on board. It effectively gives the manufacturer an excuse to continue producing trucks people actually want to buy. Consequently, this could be a strategic loophole. By improving the drag coefficient, they make the truck easier to justify under current regulations. Ultimately, anything that helps keep high-performance trucks alive is a win.
The New BMW G90 and M5 Replacement
Switching gears, the new BMW G90 has arrived at the garage. This vehicle is absolutely gorgeous. It serves as the replacement for the M5. However, upon testing it for the first time, we had to learn how to operate the sunroof together. Evidently, it opens from the back, which was a surprise. It is a beautiful machine, and a full tour will be coming in the near future.
Meanwhile, the previous M5 is currently in the shop. It is undergoing significant work under warranty. Once that work is complete, that M5 will be ready for its new home. We are giving that M5 away, so it needs to be in perfect condition before it leaves.
